Cookies are nothing more than the traces and information that we leave on servers during our internet connections, or that are left on us by the servers when we pass through the network. So, while on the one hand cookies can improve our browsing, on the other hand they can jeopardise both our privacy and the security of our information. They improve navigation when, for example, if we fill in a form with our favourite news, a server can transform this information into a cookie, which can be sent to our browser; the first time we contact this site, a cookie will be sent to our browser, thus allowing the server to load the news on the page, to meet our needs.
There are basically two macro categories of cookies: technical cookies and profiling cookies.
1.1 Technical cookies:
They are used to allow the transmission of communication over an electronic communications network or to provide a service expressly requested by the user. They are not used for other purposes. In the category of technical cookies, which do not require the user’s consent, the following are distinguished:
- Navigation or session cookies: these guarantee normal navigation and use of the website (e.g. to authenticate and access restricted areas). The use of these cookies (which are not permanently stored on the user’s device and are automatically deleted when the browser is closed) is strictly limited to the transmission of session identifiers (consisting of random numbers generated by the server) necessary to enable safe and efficient exploration of the site.
- Analytics cookies: these are used only to collect aggregate information on the number of users visiting the site, and how they visit it.
- cookies: these allow the user to navigate based on a series of selected criteria (e.g. language, products or services purchased) in order to improve the service provided to the user.
1.2 Profiling cookies:
These are aimed at creating user profiles and are used to send promotional messages targeted to the preferences shown by the user while browsing the internet. These cookies can be used for these purposes only with the user’s consent.
All cookies other than technical cookies are only installed or activated following the consent given by the user the first time he/she visits the website. Consent may be expressed in a general manner, by interacting with the brief information banner present on the landing page of the site, according to the methods indicated in this banner; or it may be provided or denied selectively, according to the methods indicated below. This consent is tracked on the occasion of subsequent visits. However, the user always has the option to revoke all or part of the consent already expressed.
